The region of Dumfries and Galloway, where Barmagachan is situated, enjoys rural beauty and the artist's delicate light. It offers the visitor quiet, rarely traveled roads, and gentle hills for walking. The area's unusually big tides allow access to several islands off the coast. The open sky offers a spectacular view of the stars on clear nights. See a map of the area.

For those with an interest in history, Robert Burns, widely recognized for his poetry and songs, lived and died in Galloway where he served as a tax collector. St. Ninian established a chapel in Whithorn when he arrived to bring Christianity to Scotland. Important digs in this vicinity offer interesting visits for those inclined towards archaeology. There are standing stones near Gatehouse-of-Fleet which date from pre-historic times. Americans can see the countryside of John Paul Jones' youth and seek out their family tree in Edinburgh's record office.
